Who fixes shower and tub problems across Tampa Bay?

High Seas Plumbing fixes shower and tub problems across Tampa Bay, from standing water to temperature swings, by diagnosing the root cause instead of swapping a showerhead.

Are you tired of standing in ankle-deep, murky water every time you bathe, or constantly fighting a shower handle that swings wildly from freezing to scalding? These are clear signs of mechanical failure or drain deterioration that will not be fixed by pouring harsh chemicals down the pipe or swapping out a showerhead. High Seas Plumbing is ready to diagnose the actual root cause of your fixture failure and get your daily routine back on track.

What are the warning signs a shower or tub needs a plumber?

A shower that keeps dripping means the O-rings or ceramic discs in the valve have degraded, letting pressurized water push past them.

The Never-Ending Drip

You turn the shower handle completely off, but the tub spout or showerhead keeps dripping steadily. You might hear it echoing down the hall at night, or notice a permanent hard-water stain forming directly under the drip path. Mechanically, this means the cartridge or stem inside your shower valve has worn out.

The rubber O-rings or ceramic discs that are supposed to create a watertight seal have degraded, allowing pressurized water to constantly push past them. If ignored, this isn't just an annoyance that spikes your water bill.

A constantly dripping shower valve will eventually wear away the brass housing inside the wall. Once the brass is scored or pitted, replacing a cheap cartridge is no longer an option, and we have to cut into the wall to replace the entire valve assembly.

Sudden Temperature Swings

Someone flushes a toilet or runs the kitchen sink, and your shower instantly turns into a scalding hazard or an ice bath. You find yourself constantly adjusting the handle just to maintain a tolerable temperature. This points to a failure in the pressure-balancing spool inside your shower valve.

This small mechanism is designed to slide back and forth to equalize hot and cold water pressure when demand changes elsewhere in the house. When it gets stuck due to mineral buildup, it stops protecting you from pressure drops. This is a serious safety hazard, especially in homes with young children or elderly family members.

Standing Water in the Tub

By the end of a five-minute shower, you are standing in three inches of soapy water. It takes twenty minutes or more for the tub to finally empty out after you step out of the bathroom. While this can occasionally be a simple hair clog in the trap, chronic slow draining often means the blockage is further down the line.

In older slab homes, this can indicate that the cast iron drain line under your floor is in the expedited deterioration stage. Relying on chemical drain cleaners here will only eat away at the remaining integrity of your pipes. If the drain is actively rusting and channeling, ignoring the slow drain will eventually lead to a complete backup of raw sewage into your tub.

The Sputtering, Weak Spray

Your showerhead used to have great pressure, but now water shoots out at weird angles, some nozzles are completely blocked, and the overall flow feels incredibly weak. This is almost always severe calcification where the tiny nozzles are being choked off by dissolved minerals in the water supply.

However, if the pressure drop is sudden, it could also mean sediment or rust from a failing galvanized supply pipe has broken loose and clogged the valve behind the wall. If you just swap the showerhead without checking the valve or the water quality, the new fixture will suffer the exact same fate.

Unexplained Water Stains Below the Bathroom

You look up at the ceiling directly beneath your second-floor bathroom and see a growing brown water stain or bubbling drywall. This usually means the shower pan has failed, the tub overflow gasket is dry-rotted, or the drain connection has come loose.

Every time you run the water, a small amount escapes the intended path and pools on the drywall below. Catching this early is critical before the subfloor rots out entirely and requires a massive structural repair.

What causes showers and tubs to fail?

Hard water and chlorine cement the moving parts of shower valves and destroy their seals, so the fix is new cartridges plus a look at water treatment.

Our Hard, Chlorinated Water

Our local water supply is notoriously hard and heavily treated with chlorine. When this water runs through your plumbing, the chlorine eats away at the rubber seals and plastic components inside your shower cartridges. At the same time, the hard water leaves behind a thick layer of scale.

Over time, this combination essentially cements the moving parts of your shower valve together and destroys the watertight seals. The immediate solution involves replacing the damaged cartridges or fixtures. However, we will also talk to you about whole-home water treatment options to stop the local water from destroying your new hardware.

Improperly Supported Drains in New Builds

We see this constantly in newer construction across the area. The plumbing was roughed in quickly, and the drain line beneath the tub or shower pan wasn't properly supported in the dirt before the concrete slab was poured. Over time, the ground shifts slightly, the pipe drops, and it creates a belly right under the drain.

Water and soap scum pool in this belly instead of flowing away. Fixing this requires a proper camera inspection to confirm the sag, followed by targeted drain repair to re-establish the correct slope.

Failing Supply Lines Behind the Wall

Sometimes the tub spout or showerhead isn't the problem at all, but rather the pipes feeding them are failing. In older homes with original copper or galvanized steel supply lines, the pipes inside the bathroom walls begin to corrode from the inside out.

Pinholes develop, or the rust builds up so thickly that water can barely get through. We do not guess on this issue. We test the pressure, inspect the accessible lines, and if the pipes are failing, we discuss targeted repiping or repairs before a hidden wall leak destroys your bathroom.

Expedited Deterioration of Cast Iron Drains

Your plumbing infrastructure is split into two completely separate systems: supply lines bringing water in, and drain lines carrying it away. Many older slab homes in the region were built with cast iron drain lines that have now outlived their intended lifespan.

The protective tar coating wears off, exposing the raw iron to water and causing it to actively rust and flake away. This creates jagged edges that catch hair and soap scum, leading to constant tub backups. Once the pipe begins channeling and thinning out, it is only a matter of time before it collapses completely.

What to Expect During Your Service Visit

Expect us to listen first, then pull the handle to inspect the valve or run a camera down a backing-up tub drain so you can see the cause yourself.

When High Seas Plumbing arrives at your home, we aren't just there to blindly swap a shower cartridge and hand you a bill. We are there to find out exactly why the fixture failed in the first place. Our trucks roll out fully stocked, and the first thing we do is listen to what you've been experiencing. Then, we investigate by pulling the handle to inspect the valve housing, or sending a camera down a backing-up tub drain so you can see the exact condition of the pipe for yourself.

We look for channeling, scale buildup, and structural integrity, ensuring there is a clear difference between an educated guess and a verified diagnosis. Every service call also includes a whole-home plumbing inspection. We check your water pressure, test your water quality, and inspect your water heater to ensure we aren't putting a temporary bandage on a larger systemic problem. If your shower valve blew out because your home's main pressure reducing valve has failed and is blasting your fixtures with high pressure, fixing just the shower will only buy you a little time.

As a licensed Florida plumbing contractor, we operate with one simple rule: we will tell you what you need, and what you don't. Once we have the evidence, we present you with clear, upfront, flat-rate options so you can make an informed decision about your home. You will never be sold something you do not genuinely need, and we offer financing options to help manage unexpected repairs.

Questions we get

Showers & Tubs — questions we get

The shower temperature swings when someone runs a tap. Can that be fixed?

Yes — that's what a pressure-balancing or thermostatic mixing valve does. Replacing an old non-balanced valve fixes the swing and adds anti-scald protection at the same time.

Water still runs from the tub spout in shower mode. What's wrong?

The diverter. Depending on the design it's either a repairable part in the spout or in the valve body — either way it's a common wear item and not a sign that the whole valve is failing.

There's a stain on the ceiling below my shower.

Usually the shower pan at the drain, or the drain connection itself, rather than the valve. It needs to be identified before any tile comes up, because the repair differs a lot between a failed pan and a loose drain assembly.
