Is your kitchen sink holding stagnant water while the disposal just hums, or are you constantly pressing that red reset button underneath the cabinet? High Seas Plumbing is ready to get your sink draining freely again with honest diagnostics and upfront replacement options.
What are the warning signs of a failing garbage disposal?
A failing garbage disposal usually announces itself with specific sounds, smells and leaks, and catching them early can mean an unjamming service instead of a new unit.
A garbage disposal rarely dies without putting up a fight first. Because these units rely on high-speed motors and heavy metal grinding plates, mechanical failures usually announce themselves with very specific sounds, smells, and leaks. Catching these symptoms early can be the difference between a quick unjamming service and having to replace a burned-out unit.
The Dead Motor Hum
When you flip the switch and hear a low, angry hum but the blades do not spin, the motor is receiving power but the grinding plate is locked up. Leaving it turned on while it hums will trip the internal breaker or literally cook the motor, usually meaning a hard object is wedged against the shredder ring.Mystery Puddles Under the Sink
Finding warped wood or a puddle inside your sink cabinet points to a cracked disposal casing, a blown internal seal, or a failed dishwasher connection. Once the hard plastic shell cracks or the main seal gives out, the unit is structurally compromised and will just keep leaking dirty wastewater into your cabinetry. The Constant Reset Routine
If you find yourself crawling under the sink to press the red reset button every few days, your disposal's internal circuit breaker is warning you of a major electrical or mechanical issue. Constantly resetting it means the motor is actively dying or there is a chronic restriction in the grinding chamber that needs to be cleared.Persistent Foul Odors
A faint smell is normal, but a strong stench of rotting garbage that survives a flush of ice cubes and citrus peels means your unit is no longer pulverizing food properly. Worn-down impellers allow organic sludge to build up under the splash baffle, which accelerates metal corrosion and often signals an impending solid blockage in your drain line.Slow Draining While Running
When the water slowly backs up into the other sink basin even while the disposal is running, the unit is failing to push the pulverized waste through the drain pipe. This happens when the grinding teeth are too dull to liquefy the food, creating a thick paste that chokes the P-trap and blocks the flow of water.Violent Shaking and Rattling
If your whole sink vibrates aggressively and sounds like a jackhammer when you turn the disposal on, the internal grinding components have likely become unbalanced. This happens when an impeller blade breaks off or the mounting assembly has vibrated loose, which will eventually snap the sink flange if ignored. Why Garbage Disposals Break Down in Tampa Bay
Garbage disposals in Tampa Bay break down from hard, mineral-heavy water, rushed renovation work and everyday misuse.
Tampa Bay presents a unique set of challenges for your kitchen plumbing, from the harsh mineral content in our municipal water to the sheer volume of rushed home renovations. We see the same patterns of failure across the region, driven by a mix of environmental factors and everyday misuse. Understanding what is actually destroying your disposal helps you protect your new unit once we get your sink functioning again.
Hard Water and Chlorine Corrosion
Our region is known for extremely hard water and high chlorine levels, which aggressively eat away at the metal shredder ring, the impellers, and the internal seals of your disposal. We frequently pull out units where the bottom has literally rusted straight through, turning a standard appliance lifespan into a much shorter countdown.Fibrous Foods and Grease Buildup
Disposals are built for light food scraps, but treating them like industrial trash compactors by grinding fibrous foods like celery strings or onion skins will quickly choke the motor. Pouring liquid grease down the drain is even worse, as it coats the grinding chamber and solidifies, trapping food particles into a massive clog that blocks the line.Improper Installation and Forgotten Knockouts
With the sheer volume of flipped houses and rushed installations in our area, we see a lot of botched disposal setups, such as forgetting to remove the knockout plug before connecting the dishwasher drain hose. We also find units that are not properly locked into the sink mounting ring, causing violent vibrations that rattle the surrounding plumbing loose.Natural Age and Mechanical Wear
Like any appliance with a high-torque electric motor and moving metal parts exposed to daily water, garbage disposals simply wear out over time. When a disposal hits the eight-to-ten-year mark, the metal impellers get dull and the internal bearings lose their lubrication, meaning larger chunks are passing into your pipes.Dropped Silverware and Foreign Objects
It is incredibly common for a stray teaspoon, a shot glass, or a piece of bone to slip past the rubber splash baffle unnoticed until you flip the wall switch. When a hard, non-organic object gets caught in the spinning impellers, it instantly jams the grinding plate and can permanently warp the internal shredder ring. How is a garbage disposal problem diagnosed?
We diagnose a disposal by checking the power, the mounting bracket, the grinding chamber, the P-trap and the drain line, so we know the disposal is actually the problem.
When High Seas Plumbing arrives at your home, we do not just blindly swap out the machine and hand you a bill. We start by confirming the diagnosis, checking the power supply, inspecting the mounting bracket for water damage, and looking for obvious mechanical jams inside the grinding chamber. We also check the P-trap and the drain line leaving the sink to make sure the problem is actually the disposal and not a heavy clog further down your plumbing system.
Your kitchen sink relies on two completely separate systems: the pressurized supply lines bringing water in, and the gravity-fed drain lines taking wastewater out. When a garbage disposal fails, it threatens the drain side by pushing unground food and grease into pipes that are not designed to handle solid waste. During our whole-home plumbing inspection, we evaluate both systems to ensure that installing a new disposal will not overwhelm an older cast iron drain or put stress on aging supply valves.
We operate on a strict rule: we will tell you what you need, and what you don't. If it is a simple jam we can clear without replacing the unit, we will fix it, but if the casing is cracked or the motor is burned out, we will show you the physical damage so you can see exactly why the unit failed. When a replacement is the only safe option, we provide upfront, flat-rate pricing for a new unit that fits your sink, with financing available if you need it.

What other kitchen plumbing problems come with a failing disposal?
A failing disposal can damage kitchen faucets or the sink basket strainer, and a severe backup can mean food waste or grease is threatening the drain line.
A failing garbage disposal often goes hand-in-hand with other kitchen plumbing issues that need professional attention. If your disposal has been vibrating violently or leaking, it may have damaged your kitchen faucets or compromised the sink basket strainer, requiring a reset. If the disposal failure was caused by a severe backup, we evaluate the health of your drain lines to ensure no rotting food or grease is threatening to cause a larger blockage in your home.

Questions we get
Garbage Disposals — questions we get
My disposal hums but doesn't turn — is it dead?
Often not. A humming disposal is usually a jammed flywheel, which can be freed, and a unit that keeps tripping its reset is telling you about a jam or a failing motor. A disposal leaking from the bottom of the housing, though, is a replacement.
Why does the sink hold water after the disposal runs?
That's a drain problem rather than a disposal problem — usually the drain arm or trap downstream. If the disposal was replaced and the drain was never re-plumbed to slope correctly, it will keep holding water no matter which unit is fitted.
What shouldn't go down a disposal?
Grease and oil, coffee grounds, eggshells, fibrous vegetable peel and anything starchy in volume. Most of them don't jam the disposal — they coat the pipe downstream and turn into next year's kitchen stoppage.
